T A K I N G T I M E
Recently I met artist/designer Taylor Levy, who along with her partner, Che-Wei Wang have listened to time. They ask the question “can we investigate decay?” They search for exactly how long it takes to get to a billion and make time an automatic mechanical motion. The results are timeless.

N E W Y O R K vs. T H E W O R L D
The NY Times’ David Gallagher linked to this chart earlier on Twitter, which tracks the listening habits of music fans in New York City and compares them to The World. Unsurprisingly, we love Animal Collective way more than anyone else.
Read the article and download the chart on the Gothamist. Yes (duh) we loved Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear and Phoenix.

The Case for Chief Design Advocates
Excerpt from the brilliant Andrew Chen. See below for further thanks and links.
My hypothesis is that Steve Jobs is one of the rare CEOs who is very focused on product desirability. In battles with the business and technology goals, desirability will almost always win out. So his role isn’t that of a designer, but rather Chief Design Advocate. This means:
He makes it clear that products should...

City Beekeeping Is Coming, Legally.
Sometime after I was a live-in nanny for a rockband and before I went to grad school for design, I was a beekeeper in rural South Carolina. That’s right, I spent the summer of 2006 driving around back roads in cut-off jeans and steel-toe boots with a man that called me “Smokey.” The experience made me value bees, organic farming even more and the people that nurture these...

I ♥ Insound Pop Up Store
Last night my boyfriend and I went to the Insound’s Pop Up store on Grand Street. You can still go too! It is open (and full of free beer) until December 21. They have a beautiful collection of music posters, vinyl albums, and nifty audio gear.
The great thing about the whole experience was that they had a selection of all the merchandise out with codes and you carried around a...

Biking, 2.0
“Today at the COP 15 Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, M.I.T. students introduced the technologically advanced Copenhagen Wheel. In addition to including various sensors and Bluetooth capability, the tire stores kinetic energy from braking for a later burst of speed.”

The Bridge Was The Twitter.
In May of 1883 the Brooklyn Bridge was built; a huge accomplishment that nearly didn’t happen. With the completion of the bridge suddenly communication was available and new ideas were able to spread more quickly as inhabitants of New York could easily cross the East River.
The Bridge itself was true innovation in engineering and human rights. Great plans were implemented that were new...

Paul Rand Made Designers Designers.
From my new favorite site Designer Books this is a WONDERFUL reminder of the leaders we are in business. I can’t help but wonder if Ford had gone with Rand if they would still be the sh**ty company they are today.
Rand’s most widely known contributions to design are his corporate identities, many of which are still in use. IBM, ABC, Cummins Engine, Westinghouse, and UPS, among many...
"You Have Torches in Your Eyes"
Last night I had an odd dream. I was walking through a story-book jungle along side a large river. A young girl was leading me. She turned and looked at me and said “You have torches in your eyes.” I looked into her eyes and saw torches burning. I then went over to the river and peered in. Vibrant long-tailed fish were chasing each. I saw my reflection and saw fire too.

Rebels Without 401K (But With A Cause).
I finished graduate school with a degree in design at the height of the downfall of the economy. In the first few quarters as a student I watched classes graduate and immediately begin amazing jobs. Full benefits, $60,000+ starting pay and required leaves to study new elements of design. There was a buzz around our school of accomplishment. We all believed if we worked hard we would get those...
